Especially during adolescence and when we go through a period of crisis on a personal level, we tend to question the reason for our existence, what are we doing here, what is the meaning of what is happening to us. We anticipate that there are no clear-cut or univocal answers in this regard; however, we want to propose some ideas on which you can reflect.
When we are assaulted by this type of existential doubts, the answers based on biology do not satisfy our desire to know. What we are really asking ourselves is how to face the day to day and integrate coherently the situations that arise. Giving meaning to life is an individual task; and for this, reflection is fundamental.
Is it possible to define life? Defining what we call “life” has been, for centuries, an unsuccessful enterprise for both science and philosophy. Although there are general characteristics that distinguish living organisms, the debate widens when we talk, for example, about viruses or artificial intelligence. In other words, there is no scientific agreement about what determines life, nor does it seem that there will be in the future.
In this sense, perhaps we should move away from the eagerness for definitions and approach questions that, for us, may become more important, such as: what to do with the life that has already been given to us, how can I give meaning to my existence, is there something that I have come to learn in my passage through the world?
For the vast majority of people, life is nothing more than a succession of all-too-similar days. Routine and monotony stain the experience of many individuals, eventually leading to a sense of apathy and deep dissatisfaction. Getting up, working, taking care of the house, sleeping and starting again does not seem to be a sufficiently relevant objective to endow existence with meaning.
Indeed, being alive is a much deeper, more complex and complete experience, even if we sometimes forget it. However, it is up to each of us to adopt an approach that goes beyond that. Here are some thoughts on the subject.
Life is uncertainty “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to find”. Remember this famous quote from the movie Forrest Gump? In reality, it holds a very profound truth, and that is that our day-to-day lives are permeated with uncertainty. In a second our health, financial or economic status can be completely transformed; you yourself have probably experienced twists in your life narrative that you never expected.
However, remember that when nothing is certain anything is possible; therefore, embrace change, flow with it and don’t cling to situations or people. Your own company is your only certainty.
It is acceptanceAlthough we often resist acceptance, living requires learning to accept. As John Lenon said, “life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans”; therefore, it is useless to wear ourselves out trying to control the future or fighting against a present that does not satisfy us. Acceptance brings us peace, restores our energy and allows us to face challenges from a position that does not feed suffering.
An adventureIf we could gain perspective on what happens to us, we would understand that life is a true adventure. We have a planet to explore, a rich emotional world to experience and endless possibilities. If one thing is certain, it is that we are all going to die, so why not make the most of the time we have been given? Love, laugh, cry, feel, be fascinated, be excited, write a script for your story that deserves to be remembered.
Life is a constant learning processThis is one of the best attitudes we can adopt if what we are looking for is psychological well-being. Inevitably over the years you will make mistakes and go through unpleasant situations. You will hurt others and they will hurt you, you will fail in your purposes, you will fall apart and you will have to rebuild yourself. In all cases, there will be a learning to be acquired, a knowledge within your reach that will help you develop and expand as a human being.
Do not seek perfection, try not to judge, forgive and forgive yourself. We are all learning to live, no one is born taught.
Life is what we make of itAs a final reflection, we want to remind you that your life will be what you decide to make of it. It is undeniable that there are aspects that are not under our control and that more than once we will see how our ability to tolerate frustration is put to the test. Even so, if there is something that no one will be able to take away from you, it is your ability to decide your attitude towards what happens. Optimism, hope and gratitude are values that bring us countless benefits and that it is up to us to cultivate and apply. You can choose.
