Overcoming a physical defect can be a great challenge for those who suffer from it. Physical defects that we do not accept in ourselves can be the source of shyness, embarrassment, nervousness, feelings of inferiority, etc.
However, although many people may feel inferior at a given moment, this does not mean that they have an inferiority complex. For a feeling or inferiority complex to be established, it is not necessary for that person to have a real defect. It is only necessary that he/she believes he/she has one, because this is also included in the physical defects.
Frequently, the cause is that in some occasion he/she felt rejected by others. Perhaps that physical defect was the origin of the rejection, as a consequence, that experience decisively marked his personality.
    We all have defects
That’s right, we all have flaws, whether we are aware of them or not. It may also happen that some people see defects where there are none. In any case, the important thing is the subjective perception.
The subjective perception of a defect refers to the belief that we have about some imperfection, whether it is real or not. And that is what is really important, because it can mark us for life. That is why it is important to overcome a physical, psychological or any other type of defect. Defects are usually ascribed to one of the following three fundamental areas:
The physical domain (bodily defect, ugliness, obesity, being too short or too tall, sexual impotence, characteristics of the opposite sex, etc.).
Intellectual level (mediocre intelligence, low culture, etc.).
The social terrain (lack of sympathy, poor speech, etc.).
Physical defects can generate feelings of inferiorityIf we are unable to overcome a physical defect, we may experience feelings of inferiority. In turn, feelings of inferiority can lead to inhibition and withdrawal. This can lead to the development of a shy and insecure personality in a context of low social activity.
The well-known Austrian physician and psychotherapist Alfred Adler studied this problem in depth, proposing an approach based on the system of psychological compensations: when someone feels inferior, he may opt for resignation.
If he chooses resignation, this will result in an attitude of exaggerated modesty and shyness, insecurity and inhibition. But if he does not resign himself, he will try to compensate for his defect in three ways which are not totally mutually exclusive and which would give rise to “psychological compensations”.
Guidelines for overcoming a physical defectA physical defect gives rise to a feeling of inferiority that must be confronted. The origin of the complex is real, it is there, but it can never be allowed to become a complex. Let’s look at some practical solutions to overcome it.
It is important to circumscribe the defect accurately. It is not because you have a hideous nose that the rest of your face has to be totally unattractive.
At the same time that you see the defect you have to value your own positive physical qualities. One can be short, but have a beautiful physical conformation; one can have ugly hands, but a beautiful mouth.
It is necessary to emphasize the good things that one has and to cushion the defect. This way, it will attract less attention. It is not to deny its existence, but to make it less apparent.
Undoubtedly, it is necessary to take advantage of all the aesthetic tricks to overcome a physical defect. It is convenient to know what kind of clothes, shoes, ornaments and make-up suit you best to overcome the defect.
Both physical and psychological compensations can be highly satisfactory. One should compensate for the defective aspect by another or other totally different ones. For example, the inability to play sports can be compensated with a love of music or reading.
It must be kept in mind that not everything is physical. Man is body and spirit.
We should not strive for unattainable perfection. One has to accept one’s own defect and learn to live with it.
There are some defects that can be corrected. Obesity is one of them. With effort and medical help it can be overcome.
One should not deny the evidence of the defect. We have to face it, look for solutions and implement them. It is even good to talk about it. The ostrich attitude leads to nothing.
If the defect is gaining ground and runs the risk of becoming the origin of a complex, it is advisable to turn to a specialist who can act as a guide to find solutions and how to deal with it.
As we have seen, it is possible to overcome a physical defect. We just have to appreciate other virtues and try to correct the defect if possible. If it becomes a complex, the best thing to do is to visit a psychologist for guidelines on how to overcome it.
