As concerns about politics grow as new ideologies emerge or more extreme ones gain support, technology goes unnoticed. But, perhaps, we should be more afraid of technology that can enable brain hacking.
While it may sound like a science fiction story, brain hacking, to some extent, is already possible. We have a belief in free will, we assume that our feelings and thoughts arise from individual freedom and, therefore, so do our actions. However, this idea is false. There are many conditioning factors that will determine how we think, feel and act. So, if our decisions are not free, what conditions them?
Choices are not freeThe decisions we make will depend on biological and social conditions that we cannot control. For example, I can choose what I am going to eat today. This decision, although at first glance it seems free, is conditioned by my genes.
I can only eat what my body tolerates. Moreover, the choice will depend on the resources I have. I can’t eat a veal steak if I don’t have the money to buy it. There are even going to be cultural factors. If my culture doesn’t tolerate eating dog meat, I’m not going to choose this meat to eat.
“Amateurs hack systems, professionals hack people.”
    -Bruce Schneier
Another example can be found in love. Do we choose who we fall in love with? Usually we don’t. These examples make it clear that, if we evaluate the decisions we make on a daily basis, we will realize that most of them are beyond our control. Consequently, we do not freely decide what to think, what to feel or what to want. There are limitations.
This belief in free will has a great consequence. If companies or governments succeed in hacking the brain, those who are easiest to manipulate will be those who believe in free will. Thus, in order to hack the brain, three things are needed: solid knowledge of biology, lots of data, and great computing power. With these three elements it would be possible to predict the decisions we make and even manipulate our feelings.
“Fear is the way to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering, suffering to the dark side.”
    -Yoda, Star Wars
Hacking the brainFake news is another case of alibi freedom. When we read a news item that is false, without knowing it, and we believe it, we will think that we are free to believe it or not. But the truth is that someone has hacked us. The person who has created the news is hacking our brain to make us believe that something false is true. In this way it is possible to hack the brain.
In a more elaborate way, with all the information we share on social networks, algorithms can be created that predict our preferences. Based on those preferences they can create fake news that are in line with what we think. In this way, personalized fake messages can be created, which can become very convincing.
Obviously, this is not new. Advertising has been doing it forever. The difference is that now, with the rise of the internet and social media, there is more data about people and messages can be more personalized. In addition, we now know some of the keys. For example, the use of fear, hatred and greed. Thus, if we hate a person or group, we will believe everything bad they tell us about them.
What the future holdsBut it doesn’t stop there. Today, the use of devices that measure heart rate is more widespread. What if heart rate data were correlated with the searches we do on the Internet? What if it were with credit card spending? They could go so far as to sell us any product or political ideology. In this situation, does the voter really know what is convenient and is the customer always right?
The reaction is backlash. Instead of facing the challenge, we take refuge in even more remote illusions. We are resorting to religious and nationalist fantasies that are increasingly distant from the scientific reality of our time.
However, there is a way out that lies in knowing the weak points. Computers are hacked because there are faulty lines of code, humans through fears, hatreds, prejudices and desires. Pirates cannot create hatred and fear out of thin air. But, when they discover that it exists in a person, it is easier for them to know what keys to play to increase them.
